Where Is the Catalytic Converter Located?

The catalytic converter is part of a vehicle's exhaust system. In many vehicles, it is positioned between the engine and the muffler. Its exact location depends on the engine design, exhaust layout, vehicle type, and number of converters used.

A primary or close-coupled catalytic converter is usually found near the engine because exhaust gases are hottest in this area. A secondary converter is more commonly located farther underneath the vehicle along the exhaust pipe.

Front-Wheel Drive Vehicle Location

On many front-wheel drive vehicles with a transverse engine, the primary catalytic converter is located close to the exhaust manifold. Depending on the engine design, it may be visible from the engine bay or from underneath the front of the vehicle.

Rear-Wheel Drive Vehicle Location

On vehicles with a longitudinal engine, the converter is often positioned underneath the vehicle behind the engine and transmission area. V-type engines can use separate exhaust paths and may have converters on both sides.

Why Some Vehicles Have Multiple Catalytic Converters

Some exhaust systems use more than one converter. A vehicle may have primary converters close to the engine and additional secondary converters farther down the exhaust system. Dual-bank engines may also use separate converters for each exhaust bank.
