The catalytic converter is part of a vehicle's exhaust system. In many vehicles, it is positioned between the engine and the muffler. Its exact location depends on the engine design, exhaust layout, vehicle type, and number of converters used.
A primary or close-coupled catalytic converter is usually found near the engine because exhaust gases are hottest in this area. A secondary converter is more commonly located farther underneath the vehicle along the exhaust pipe.
