What Is an EAN-13 Barcode?

EAN-13 is a 13-digit retail barcode format used to encode product identification numbers. It is commonly found on consumer goods and retail packaging around the world.

The first 12 digits contain the data, while the final digit is a check digit calculated from the previous 12 digits.

Why Does EAN-13 Use Parity Patterns?

The first digit is not encoded directly as a normal group of bars. Instead, it determines the L/G parity pattern used to encode the next six digits on the left side of the barcode.
