About This IPC to BNS Converter

On 1 July 2024, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023 replaced the 164-year-old Indian Penal Code (IPC), 1860 as India's primary criminal law. While the BNS retains most core offences from the IPC, many provisions have been reorganized — the IPC's 511 sections have been consolidated into 358 sections under the BNS. This means a section number you may have memorized, such as IPC 302 for murder, no longer applies the same way — that offence is now covered under BNS Section 103. Our IPC to BNS converter tool helps advocates, law students, police personnel, and judiciary aspirants quickly cross-reference old IPC sections with their new BNS equivalents, along with key notes on what has changed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this IPC to BNS converter tool free to use?
Yes, this tool is completely free with no signup required and no limit on the number of searches you can perform.
When did the BNS replace the IPC?
The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 came into force on 1 July 2024, replacing the Indian Penal Code, 1860. Applicability to earlier acts and pending proceedings depends on the statutory savings and case circumstances.
Does every IPC section map to a similarly numbered BNS section?
No. The numbering has been completely reorganized. For example, IPC Section 302 (murder) is now BNS Section 103, while BNS Section 302 covers a completely different, less serious offence.
Can I rely on this tool for filing a case or legal drafting?
This tool is meant for quick reference and educational purposes only. Always cross-verify section numbers with the official bare act of the BNS 2023, or consult a qualified advocate before use in actual legal proceedings.
Are there new offences in the BNS that did not exist in the IPC?
Yes. The BNS introduces newly codified offences such as organized crime (Section 111), petty organized crime (Section 112), and terrorist acts (Section 113), which were not standalone provisions under the IPC.
What happened to IPC Section 124A (sedition)?
BNS Section 152 deals with acts endangering the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India, but it is not a simple one-to-one renumbering of IPC 124A. The term "sedition" itself is no longer used, and the new provision has a broader scope.
