What PDF Metadata Can Be Removed?

PDF metadata is information stored inside the file rather than displayed as normal page content. ExifTool can clear many writable metadata fields, including common document properties and XMP metadata.

Metadata Type Example Removal
Title Annual Report 2026 Removed when writable
Author Person or company name Removed when writable
Subject and Keywords Finance, invoice, client Removed when writable
Creator and Producer Application or PDF software Removed when writable
Date and XMP Metadata Create date, modify date, XMP properties Removed when writable

Important Privacy Note

Removing metadata is different from redacting visible or embedded document content. Names, email addresses, comments, images, form values, layers, attachments, or text that appear inside the PDF pages are not automatically removed by this tool.

For stronger cleanup, QPDF is used automatically when available to rewrite the PDF after ExifTool clears metadata.

How It Works

Remove PDF metadata in three simple steps.

Upload PDF

Choose a PDF file from your device. The tool checks the file signature before processing.

Remove Metadata

ExifTool clears writable metadata. If QPDF is available, the cleaned file is also rewritten automatically.

Download Clean PDF

Download the processed PDF and review it before sharing or publishing.
