What Is a Ping Test?

A ping test is a basic network diagnostic used to check whether a remote host responds to network requests and to measure the approximate round-trip response time between two systems.

Ping commonly sends ICMP echo requests and waits for echo replies. The measured time is normally displayed in milliseconds.

What Does Latency Mean?

Latency is the amount of time required for a packet to travel to the destination and for a response to return. Lower ping times generally indicate a faster network response.

What Is Packet Loss?

Packet loss occurs when one or more test packets do not receive a response. A small amount may be caused by congestion or ICMP filtering, while persistent loss can indicate a network or connectivity problem.

Some shared hosting providers disable proc_open or restrict the operating system ping command. In that situation the page can load normally, but server-side ping testing cannot run until the required server feature is available.
